However, as legalization is still in progress, the number of people using marijuana is increasing, and so is the number of those with CHS weed issues. Since 2004, doctors have identified key symptoms and characteristics of the condition that can help speed up diagnosis. However, researchers have yet to determine the cause of CHS since it does not affect all users of marijuana. In two case reports, doctors used lorazepam (Ativan) to manage CHS-related nausea and vomiting. As people with CHS often only consult their doctors during the hyperemesis stage, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the treatment of people during the prodromal stage.

Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is a rare but important condition that can affect long-term, frequent cannabis users. It manifests through recurrent episodes of severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. While cannabis is widely recognized for its therapeutic benefits, including its antiemetic (anti-nausea) properties, CHS represents a unique and paradoxical response in a small subset of users. Understanding CHS can help individuals make informed decisions about their cannabis use and maintain their overall well-being.

Why Some Drugs Are Harder To Quit Than Others

Every person will have their own experience, but the process typically follows a standard timeline. Bureaucratic delays are a major issue for developers in redevelopment projects. Slow approval and clearance processes increase costs, while inefficiencies in government departments cause unnecessary delays, further hindering project timelines and escalating expenses.

Developers must complete the project within the stipulated timeframe and hand over possession of the units within three months. Additionally, all common areas must be transferred to the association of allottees. Scientists still aren’t 100% sure what causes CHS in the body, but a general understanding is available. By understanding the effects of marijuana on the brain and gastrointestinal system, one can more easily understand the causes of CHS. Additionally, not all cannabis users develop CHS, causing further difficulty in describing the syndrome.

chs stages

Many people with CHS go to their doctor or an emergency room (ER) for treatment. However, doctors may find it challenging to diagnose the syndrome because people tend not to report their use of marijuana. You feel nauseous all the time, and sometimes, the vomiting is so intense that you can’t keep food or water down.

It’s a humbling experience, but one that has taught you a lot about your body’s limits-and the importance of listening to it. Cleveland Clinic’s primary care providers offer lifelong medical care. From sinus infections and high blood pressure to preventive screening, we’re here for you. Some people call certain symptoms of CHS “scromiting.” The term combines “vomiting” and “screaming.” https://rixtor.live-website.com/12-things-that-happen-to-your-body-when-you-stop You may have intense pain, which causes you to scream while you vomit. Not everyone with the condition seeks medical help or tells their provider that they use marijuana.

Some patients increase their cannabis use, believing the anti-emetic benefits it provides will ease their symptoms when, in fact, it will only increase them. If you were to ask a group of individuals that use marijuana, you would likely hear many of them state that the drug is not addictive and has no harmful effects. Marijuana is addictive, with up to 30% of those using the drug having some degree of marijuana use disorder. Long-term, chronic marijuana use can lead to multiple health complications, including cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Many do not know of this syndrome and are surprised when they begin experiencing adverse symptoms due to their chronic use. By learning about cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, individuals can make more informed choices regarding their marijuana use.

Risks and Complications of CHS

Another doctor reported using a combination of injectable lorazepam and promethazine, another antinausea medication. Researchers have identified two receptors called CB1 and CB2 to which marijuana molecules attach. Receptors are specialized cells that respond to specific stimuli or changes in the environment. As CHS is a newly described condition, many doctors may find it challenging to diagnose and treat.

How to Stop Marijuana Cravings?

So, the only way to reduce CHS symptoms is by stopping cannabis use. The hyperemetic phase of CHS typically lasts for only 24–48 hours 6, but the risk for relapse is high if the patient returns to cannabis use. Case reports have demonstrated a remission in CHS symptoms upon cessation of cannabis use for extended periods 6,51–54,57,59–62,68,71. Unfortunately, many of these patients relapse upon resuming cannabis 6,59,61,62. It has been suggested that many of these patients increase or continue their cannabis use because of their perception that it will have beneficial effects on nausea 52. Patient education should therefore be provided with emphasis on the paradoxical nature of the symptoms of CHS.
