In late 2020, brothers Zachary and Micah Preciado, who ran the YouTube animation channel ZAMination, would join forces with Zach and Seth Belanger, who also ran a similar YouTube channel of their own. Having formed their own small company, they got to work creating a video game as part of a multi-year plan. After a few months of development and with the help of Isaac Christopherson as a director, Poppy Playtime was born.

The humans must escape the building while Huggy Wuggy or one of his friends hunts them down. Playtime Co. sends in teams of Resource Extraction Specialists to find and retrieve toy parts in the unsecured and dangerous areas of the factory which have been taken over by the rampant experiments. It is believed that the game takes place after the catastrophic Hour of Joy. The Specialists are responsible for assembling a relic – comprised of six parts dispersed amongst the Puzzle Pillars – by solving three randomized puzzles successfully. Once all six parts have been obtained, the Specialists must activate the assembly line chute to transport the toy onto the train. Along the way, the specialists must evade the Bigger Body Experiments that are tracking them down.
